Accessibility Options in Boardable

Learn how to adjust Boardable for ease of use and customize the user experience for special accommodations.

I. Navigating to Accessibility Options

The Accessibility Menu provides several options to help accommodate various needs. Multiple options can be utilized. When a particular item is engaged, it will contain a checkmark in the box to make it easy to view which menu options are being utilized.

Note: when accessibility option(s) are engaged, the change will occur throughout the Boardable platform for this user until the option is turned off by the user; accessibility settings are saved when logging off.

There are three ways to access the Accessibility Menu:

  1. Press CTRL+U on your keyboard at anytime

    1. The Accessibility Menu window will be displayed

    2. Click on one or more of the options

    3. When finished, click the X at the top of the Accessibility Menu to close the menu

  2. Through Profile Panel options

    1. Click your name in the top bar (Profile Panel) to access the drop-down menu

    2. Click Accessibility

    3. The Accessibility Menu window will be displayed

    4. Click on one or more of the options

    5. When finished, click the X at the top of the Accessibility Menu to close the menu

  3. Prior to Organization Selection

    1. If a user is a member of multiple organizations within Boardable, click the open arms icon after logging in and prior to entering any of the organizations

    2. The Accessibility Menu window will be displayed

    3. Click on one or more of the options

    4. When finished, click the X at the top of the Accessibility Menu to close the menu

II. Explanation of Accessibility Options

The following explains each of the options available (in the order displayed on the Accessibility Menu) and what each do when clicked.

Note: Boardable's Help Center is run through a third party vendor; accessibility options selected will not carry through to help articles at this time.

  • Language Selection: ability to select from a multitude of languages to change the language on the Accessibility Menu only

  • Dictionary: provides the ability to search for words in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary

    • When this option is turned on, highlight a word on the interface to see the dictionary definition.

  • Screen Reader: provides three options in regards to the reading speed

    • Click 1: Reader Normal - the reader speaks at a normal speed

    • Click 2: Reader Fast - the reader speaks at a fast speed

    • Click 3: Reader Slow - the reader speaks slightly slower than normal speed

    • Click 4: Deselects the option and disables screen reading

  • Contrast: provides four options for the look and feel of the screen; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Invert Colors - everything light turns dark and vice versa

    • Click 2: Dark Contrast - dark background with bright colored menu options

    • Click 3: Light Contrast - white background with dark menu options

    • Click 4: Desaturate - colors are muted and it has a more black and white feel

    • Click 5: Deselects the option and returns to Boardable's normal color scheme

  • Smart Contrast

    • Provides a slightly higher contrast between background and text when deemed necessary

  • Highlight Links

    • Any buttons or links are highlighted with a black background, yellow foreground, and are underlined

  • Bigger Text: text becomes larger with each click of the button

    • There are four size options, the fifth click of the button will return to Boardable's standard size

  • Text Spacing: provides three spacing options; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Light spacing - slightly adjusts spacing between letters and words

    • Click 2: Moderate spacing - adjusts spacing even more

    • Click 3: Heavy spacing - adjusts spacing even more

    • Click 4: Deselects the option and returns to Boardable's standard spacing

  • Pause Animations

    • If there is movement on the page, it will be paused

    • Note: at this time, the Pause Animations does not pause the attention grabbers available through chat in Spotlight to rain hearts or confetti down the page

  • Dyslexia Friendly: provides two options; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Dyslexia Friendly - changes text to dyslexia friendly font

    • Click 2: Legible Fonts - adjusts fonts for increased legibility

    • Click 3: Deselects the option and returns to Boardable's standard look

  • Cursor: provides three options for ease of finding information as well as reading; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Big Cursor - makes the cursor big and more obvious

    • Click 2: Reading Mask - brightens a smaller band across the page and dims the rest of the page; move up and down to easily focus on a section - the cursor moves the band up and down; clicking menu options remains the same

    • Click 3: Reading Guide - creates a line to use as a guide for ease of reading with the cursor directly below the line; the cursor turns to a pointing hand when hovered over a button or link - click to engage

    • Click 4: Deselects the option and returns the cursor to its standard state

  • Tooltips

    • User can hover the mouse over onscreen elements and alternative text and labels are displayed in high contrast and easy to read font

  • Line Height: provides three options; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Line Height (1.5x) - increases line height to 1.5x the standard

    • Click 2: Line Height (1.75x) - increases line height to 1.75x the standard

    • Click 3: Line Height (2x) - increases line height to 2x the standard

    • Click 4: Deselects the option and returns to Boardable's standard line height

  • Text Align: provides four options; a new option is displayed with each click of the button

    • Click 1: Alight left - aligns all text to the left

    • Click 2: Alight right - aligns all text to the right

    • Click 3: Alight center - centers all text

    • Click 4: Justify - aligns text evenly so the right and left have a clean edge

    • Click 5: Deselects the option and returns to Boardable's standard alignment

  • Reset All

    • Removes all selected options and returns to Boardable's standard look and feel

  • Page Structure: opens a separate window that provides three different views of the page currently displayed (click X at the top of this window to close it)

    • Headings: displays the page in a heading level format (H1, H2, H3, etc.) - if one of the links displayed is clicked, it brings the user to that location on the page

    • Landmarks: if one of the links displayed is clicked, it brings the user to that location on the page

    • Links: displays all of the links available on that page, if one of the links displayed is clicked, it brings the user to that location in a new window

  • Move/Hide: opens the Move/Hide Widget option where there are two tabs available

    • Move Widget: allows the user to click on circles that represent different parts of the screen

      • Click a circle and then click Move Widget to move the Accessibility Menu to a different location on the screen; each time the menu is opened in the future, it will return to this new location

      • Click the left arrow at the top or the Cancel button to return to the main Accessibility Menu

    • Hide Widget: this is not recommended, it is easier to simply close the widget - hide can remove access to the menu

III. Explanation of Accessibility Profiles

Accessibility Profiles combine the options above to customize Boardable for specific ability experiences with a single click.

Click Accessibility Profiles to choose between profiles:

Click one of these of these to automatically turn on one or more accessibility options:

  • Motor Impaired turns on:

    • Pause Animations

    • Tooltips.

  • Blind turns on:

    • Screen Reader at normal speed.

      • To select a different speed, click Screen Reader until the preferred reading speed is reached.

  • Color Blind turns on:

    • Smart Contrast

    • High Saturation

  • Dyslexia turns on:

    • Dyslexia Friendly

    • Pause Animations

  • Visually-impaired turns on:

    • Bigger Text

    • Pause Animations

    • Legible Fonts

    • Big Cursor

    • Tooltips

  • Cognitive & Learning turns on:

    • Smart Contrast

    • Bigger Text

    • Pause Animations

    • Reading Guide

    • Tooltips

  • Seizure & Epileptic turns on:

    • Pause Animations

    • Low Saturation

These options can be further personalized after a profile selected. Scroll down in the Accessibility Menu to do so.
